NotesBetween 20 April 1692 and 23 July 1713 after the disappearance of the Ridderschap, apparently due to pirate activity around Madagascar the Council of Policy despatched officials on board the recently repaired Tamboer to the island to investigate the matter. To assist the officials they also sent the company owned Malagasy slave interpreter Inserwole van Madagascar otherwise known as Ysserwolle and Cornelis - the latter being his baptismal name. From Madagascar the Tamboer proceeded to Batavia from where Inserwole was returned to the Cape.

The first Cornelis van Madagascar appears in the record on 8 March 1677 (1676?) when he is sold by Arijaen van Asperen the captain of the Voorhout to Joannes Valckenryck for Rds 87 in a joint transaction.

As far as can be thus far asertained, there were two adult, company owned, Malagasy slaves baptised Cornelis at the Cape on 20 April 1692 and 20 November 1695 - the Malagasy names were not recorded in either instance. They were Cornelis van Madagascar and Cornelis van Madagascar

The census (monsterrol) of 1695 does not include any company owned slaves named Cornelis.

The last record thus far located mentioning a Cornelis van Madagascar is on 23 July 1713 of two slaves Dianira van der Caap and Cornelis van Madegascar owned by Simon van der Stel who baptise their son Johannes Cornelis van der Caep.33,34

Before 30 June 1709, Helena Barbara Constant was born in bondage and was owned by Simon vander Stel de Caep de Goede Hoop, the baptism of this child as a slave of Simon van der Stel is curious. Slave TransactionsAfter 12 October 1679 Adam van de Caep was sold by Henrik Crudop to Simon van der Stel, this transaction is assumed. It was common that the commander, and later governor, sold his slaves to his successor and that these transactions were not recorded. However, on 9 May 1686, in a second recorded transaction the slave is purchased by Christiaen Magnus, for the same amount. A line was drawn through the date on the original record and replaced with the latter date. Magnus stipulated that he was purchasing the slave for the same amount because the original purchaser, Heems, acquired the slave illegally (malefido et dolo?) and he had been ordered returned to Deeron by the Commander, Simon van der Stel.77,78

On on 23 January 1699 in the Simon (as translated): January 23. A new cannon sent to Robben Island for signalling.

About noon two shots were fired from Lion's Head, and at sunset the vessels “Stad Ceulen” and “Drie Kroonen” arrived in a fair state of health and condition, on board of which were the Hon. Councillor Extraordinary and Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel and family, who succeeds his father, Simon van der Stel. They had left Texel on the 22nd September last with the “Eycklenburg”, “Spiegel,” “Overryp,” “ Berkenrode,” and “Verhuyzen,” expected here every minute. For the sake of refreshing themselves somewhat, the Governor had touched at St. Jago on the 10th November, and remained there until the 16th. Although the south-east wind commenced to blow very heavily in the evening the Governor and family were conducted from the ship by the chief merchant Sieur Samuel Elsevier and the Hon. Fiscal Joan Blesius, and landed at the Sandhills, where he was most civilly received by his father and the other members of the council.

The military and burghers, both foot and horse, had come under arms for the same purpose, and stood in double line, viz., the military within the Castle and the burghers outside the gate; three volleys were fired with cannon shots in between. The members of the Council who were present and some of the burgher officers were treated to a glass of wine at Government House, where they once more solemnly welcomed His Honour. After this both military and burghers retired.. Also mentioned: Willem Adriaan van der Stel, Joan Blesius and Samuel Elsevier.170

The south-easter having abated, the new Governor was busy on the pier very early this morning, in order to land the boxes containing the young trees and all further kinds of plants, and have the whole conveyed to the Company's gardens.

The ex-Governor also ordered that various convicts who were serving in chains, and had committed merely slight offences, should at their humble request be released from irons.. Also mentioned: Willem Adriaan van der Stel.170

  78. [S606] J.L. (Leon) Hattingh, "Foute en regstellings", Op bladsy 146 van die addendum kom nog een van daardie onverklaarbare lees en verstaan foute voor. By die datum van 9.5.1686 verskyn by Böeseken:
"Thomas from Madagascar( 8/9), sold by Will Deeron to Christiaen Magnus for Rds. 33. A note attached to this deed states that by order of the Commander the slave Thomas, who had been acquired by Magnus malefide et dolo, was given back to Will Deeron".
  79. [S418] Anna J. Böeseken, Slaves and Free Blacks at the Cape 1658-1700, p.55. Then when the Portuguese ship Nostra Signora de los Milagros was wrecked in April 1686 off Cape Agulhas and 10 of the slaves who had been on board fled into the interior, van der Stel came to an agreement with the merchant Jan de Paiva to pay Rds. 25 for the right to catch and sell three of these slaves. Should he not succeed in catching any of them he would gain nothing in return for his Rds. 25. A few months later he did catch Lorezo Mayor, whom he sold for Rds. 70, thus making a profit of Rds. 45 on the transaction.
p.146. 5.6.1686: Bartholomé, Lorenç0 el Grande, Alexander, Thomas, Christoval, Antonio, Pedro, Lorenço Pequeno, Francisco and Joan, ten slaves belonging to senior merchant Jan de Paiva of the wrecked ship Nostra Signora de los Milagros, were still at large. They were all from Mozambique. Governor Simon van der Stel paid de Paiva Rds. 25 for the right to sell three of them if he
recaptured them. If he caught fewer than three, he would still pay Rds. 25.

  142. [S606] J.L. Daarin word beweer dat die slavin Susanna Catharina van Ceylon deur Simon van der Stel vrygestel is, “who also gave her a ‘liberale gifte’. (The amount is not stated in the document)”, deel Böeseken ons mee. In die teks van die boek (p. 57) lees ‘n mens ook van die geval: “With her freedom she received a ‘liberale gifte’. How much that was we are not told, but it must have enabled her to find her feet as a Free Black at the Cape”, skryf Böeseken.
