Vrijbriewen and Burgher StatusFrederick Russouw de Wit became a burgher on 16 June 1686, in Dutch vryburgher or vrijburgher, initially a status in which a soldier or other employee of the VOC was released from their contractual obligations to the VOC and permitted to farm, become a tradesman, or work for others. Subsequently some individuals, including the Huguenot refugees, were brought to the Cape specifically to farm and were burghers from the time of their arrival de Caep de Goede Hoop.1
Slave TransactionsOn 11 February 1687 Antoni van Madagascar was sold by Roelof Diodati to Fredrick Russouw de Wit, for Rds. 32. Böeseken does not identify the seller, but Shell says he is Diodati.3,4
On 10 April 1687 Laurens van Bengale was sold by Johann van Buytenhem to Fredrick Russouw de Wit, for Rds. 50.5
On 26 January 1688 Abraham van Madagascar was sold by Pieter Noorman to Frederick Russouw de Wit, for Rds. 38.6
On 23 March 1689 Jacob van der Kust Coromandel was sold by Roelof Diodati to Frederick Russouw de Wit, for Rds. 60.7
On 12 October 1689 Fredrick Russouw de Wit bought a slave, Arent van Madagascar, from Henning Hüsing, for one hundred wagon-loads of wood.8
On 6 February 1690 Apollo van Madagascar and Pieter van Madagascar were sold by William Deeron to Fredrick Russouw de Wit, for Rds. 98.9
On 14 February 1690 Pieter van Macassar was sold by Fredrick Russouw de Wit to Steven Vermey, for Rds. 49.10
On 26 May 1690 Saterdag van Bouton was gifted by Pieter Stippert, to Fredrick Russouw de Wit, for a period of two years. If Stippert did not claim him back within that time, Saterdag was to be emancipated.11
On 28 August 1690 Anthoni van Madagascar was sold from the estate of Leendert Jansz van Gijselen by Fredrick Russouw de Wit and Jan Dircks de Beer to Simon van der Stel for Rds. 100.12,13
