Slave TransactionsOn 26 April 1686 Thomas van Madagascar was sold by William Deeron to Guillaume Heems, for Rds. 33. However, on 9 May 1686, in a second recorded transaction the slave is purchased by Christiaen Magnus, for the same amount. A line was drawn through the date on the original record and replaced with the latter date. Magnus stipulated that he was purchasing the slave for the same amount because the original purchaser, Heems, acquired the slave illegally (malefido et dolo?) and he had been ordered returned to Deeron by the Commander, Simon van der Stel.1,2

A note attached to this deed states that by order of the Commander the slave Thomas, who had been acquired by Magnus malefide et dolo, was given back to Will Deeron.. By die datum van 9.5.1686 verskyn by Böeseken:
"Thomas from Madagascar( 8/9), sold by Will Deeron to Christiaen Magnus for Rds. 33. A note attached to this deed states that by order of the Commander the slave Thomas, who had been acquired by Magnus malefide et dolo, was given back to Will Deeron".
Hereinafter cited as "Foute en regstellings."
