Baptisms

Helena Barbara Constant was baptized on 30 June 1709 Nederduitsche Gereformeerde Kerk, (Cape Town), de Caep de Goede Hoop. The baptism was witnessed by Francina-Helena van de Caep. This baptism is anomalous - the parents were married the previous year and would therefor have had to be emancipated, as slaves were not permitted to marry, and yet this child is described in the record as Een slave-kind van den Out-Gouverneur Simon van der Stel.²

Slave Births

Before 30 June 1709, Helena Barbara Constant was born in bondage and was owned by Simon vander Stel de Caep de Goede Hoop, the baptism of this child as a slave of Simon van der Stel is curious. The parents were married 13 months previously and slaves were not permitted to marry, so they must have been emancipated prior to their marriage and the child therefor born in freedom.¹
