Slave Births | Before 6 May 1708, Dirkje van de Caep was born in bondage and was owned by Theunis Dircksen van Schalckwyck de Caep de Goede Hoop.20 |
Slave Transactions | On 3 October 1671 Pieter van Bengale was sold by Carel Broersen to Theunis Dircksen Schalckwyck, for f 1 650. The transaction included Broersen's farm including the house and household goods, corn, livestock, two fishing sloops and fishing barrels and nets. In terms of the agreement he would remain in the house for a period, and kept a horse, two pigs, two kists, and his bedding. He also transferred his fishing rights to Van Schalckwijck.21,22,23 In 1675 Louis van Nagapatnam was sold by Isbrand Gosken to Theunis Dircksen van Schalckwyck, a condition of the sale was that Louis would be freed after eight years.24 On 17 June 1677 Tomee was sold by Joan Bax van Herentals to Theunis Dircksen van Schalckwyck, for Rds 60.6,25 Lijsje van Madagascar may be the slave sold by Adriaen van Asperen, to Theunis Dircksen Schalckwyck on 12 January 1678, for Rds. 18.26,27 On 11 October 1678 Thomas van Malabar was sold by Aletta van Hinloopen to Theunis Dirks van Schalkwijk, for Rds. 60.28,29 On 25 May 1679 Jan van Batavia was sold by Matthijs Vonck to Theunis Dircksen Schalckwyck.30 On 8 June 1679 Pasquael van Bengale was sold by Tobias Marquaert to Theunis Dirks van Schalkwijk, for Rds. 65. I have assumed this to be the same slave sold in 1669 by Jochem Marquaert. Corrections welcome.31 On 21 January 1684 Arent van Madagascar was sold by William Deeron to Theunis Dirks van Schalkwijk, for Rds. 53.32 On 21 January 1684 Unnamed and Gender Unspecified Slave van Madagascar was sold by William Deeron to Theunis Dircksen van Schalckwyck, for Rds. 53.33 On 27 January 1684 Unnamed and Gender Unspecified Slave van Madagascar was sold by Steven Bradly to Theunis Dircksen van Schalckwyck, for Rds. 78.34 On 29 January 1684 Unnamed and Gender Unspecified Slave van Madagascar was sold by Steven Bradly to Theunis Dircksen van Schalckwyck, for Rds. 80.35 On 26 October 1685 Christina van Madagascar was sold by Oliver Cranisbough to Theunis Dircksen van Schalckwyck, for 90 Rds.36 On 26 October 1685 Martinus van Madagascar was sold by Oliver Cranisbough to Theunis Dircksen van Schalckwyck, for Rds. 90.37 On 6 December 1685 Titus van Madagascar was sold by Jan Baptist Groeneveld to Theunis Dircksen van Schalckwyck, for Rds. 60.38 On 6 December 1685 Aaron van Madagascar was sold by Jan Baptist Groeneveld to Theunis Dircksen van Schalckwyck, for Rds. 60.39 On 6 December 1685 Moyses van Madagascar was sold by Jan Baptist Groeneveld to Theunis Dircksen van Schalckwyck, for Rds. 60.40 On 14 March 1686 Jan van Mozambique was sold by Jeremias van Zeijl to Theunis Dircksen van Schalckwyck, for Rds. 55.41 On 15 August 1686 Lorenço el Grande van Mozambique was sold by Simon van der Stel to Theunis Dircksen Schalckwyck, for Rds. 70.42 On 28 September 1686 Isaak van Madagascar was sold by Rogier Bernhard de Jonge to Theunis Dircksen Schalckwyck, for Rds. 40.43 On 28 November 1686 Theunis Dircksen van Schalckwyck bought a slave, Aencas van Madagascar, from Rogier Bernhard de Jonge, for Rds. 30.44 On 4 December 1686 Valentijn van Madagascar was sold by Matthijs Bouw to Theunis Dircksen van Schalckwyck, for Rds. 53.45 On 27 December 1686 Valentijn van Madagascar was sold by Jacobus Broeg to Theunis Dircksen Schalckwyck, for Rds. 42.46 On 27 December 1686 Orson van Madagascar and Jacob van Madagascar were sold by Roelof Diodati to Theunis Dircksen Schalckwyck, for Rds. 64.47 On 2 January 1687 Domingo van Masulipatnam was sold by Andries Els to Theunis Dircksen Schalckwyck, for Rds. 25.48 On 28 February 1687 Orson van Madagascar and Jacob van Madagascar were sold by Theunis Dircksen van Schalckwyck to Pieter Jansz van der Westhuijsen.49 On 13 April 1688 Hendrik van Malabar was sold by Dirck Winieke to Theunis Dircksen Schalckwyck, for Rds. 55.50 On 5 December 1689 Valentijn van Madagascar was sold by Theunis Dircksen Schalckwyck to Joost Strydom, although Van Schalkwijck bought two slaves named Valentijn van Madagascar in 1686, I have assumed this to be the correct individual for this transaction because he fits the age profile.51 On 23 May 1690 Pieter van Naganapatnam was sold by Jacob Brock to Theunis Dircksen Schalckwyck, for Rds. 50.52 On 28 April 1691 Theunis Dircksen Schalckwyck sold Rachael van Batavia to Arije Gerts Prinsloo, for Rds. 100.53 On 14 November 1691 Arent van Madagascar was sold by Theunis Dircksen van Schalckwyck to Gerrit Janse van Deventer and Michiel Niemand, for f 400. The amount of f 200 was to be paid on 1.1.1693.54 On 2 July 1693 Theunis Dircksen Schalckwyck bought a slave, Emanuel van Malabar, from Jacob Dircx van Uijthuysen, for Rds. 70.55 On 24 May 1695 Baja van Buna was sold by Claes Bronckhorst to Theunis Dircksen van Schalckwyck, for Rds. 80.56 On 9 June 1695 Francoijs van Ceijlon was sold by Jan Brommert to Theunis Dircksen van Schalckwyck, for Rds. 100.57 On 24 October 1695 Emanuel van Malabar and Domingo van Masulipatnam were were exchanged by Theunis Dircksen van Schalckwyck for Arent van Madagascar who was owned by Jan Maerschalk. Domingo van Masulipatnam was permitted to keep his money. Because he fits the age profile and there seems to be no other candidate, I have assumed Domingo to be the same individual purchased by Van Schalckwijck in 1687 even though on that occasion he was described as from Masulipatnam. Corrections welcome.58 On 25 June 1697 Isak van Bengale was sold by Hendrick van Buytenhem to Theunis Dircksen Schalckwyck, for Rds. 70.59 On 21 April 1698 Thomas van Batavia was sold by Henning Hüsing to Johann Lorenz, for Rds. 150, Theunis Dirks van Schalkwijk stood surety.60 On 13 February 1700 Francois van Bengale was sold by Theunis Dircksen Schalckwyck to Harmen Barentz, for Rds. 100.61 On 5 August 1700 Sante van Schandin was sold by Theunis Dircksen Schalckwyck to Dain Majampa Singara, for Rds. 85.62 On 13 April 1717 Marij NN and Dirkje van de Caep were perhaps mother and daughter who along with another sibling, were sold from the estate of Theunis Dircksen van Schalckwyck to Jürgen Pieterson van den Heever for Rds 104.63 |

"Pieter from Bengal (14/15 ), sold together with his house and household goods by Carel Broersen to Theunis Dircx van Schalkwijck".
- [S418] Anna J.
