Baptisms - WitnessPieter Jansz van der Westhuijsen potentially witnessed the baptism of Johannes van Niekerk on 15 September 1697 Nederduitsche Gereformeerde Kerk, (Cape Town), this witness has not been positively identified.6
Monsterrollen and Opgaafrollen (Muster and tax rolls)In 1674 Maria Jansz Visser appears to be enumerated alone in the monsterrol under the name Schotze Marie - my thanks to Mansell Upham for pointing out that a process of elimination led him to this conclusion. Ockert Corneliszoon Olivier with whom she was engaged in an extra-marital relationship was enumerated separately and also alone. Her children Aeltje Wilhelmse and Cornelis Ockers appear to be enumerated among three unnamed children in the guardianship of Maria Hendricksz Winkelhausen and Pieter Janssen van Westhuisen under the entry 'd' Lieren [sic] 3 k[inders]. I am not sure who the third child was.7
In 1675 Maria Jansz Visser appears to be enumerated alone in the monsterrol Cape district under the name Schotze Marie - my thanks to Mansell Upham for pointing out that a process of elimination led him to this conclusion. Ockert Corneliszoon Olivier with whom she was engaged in an extra-marital relationship was enumerated separately and also alone. Her three unnamed children Aeltje Wilhelmse, Cornelis Ockers and Dina Olivier appear to be enumerated in the guardianship of Maria Hendricksz Winkelhausen and Pieter Janssen van Westhuisen under the entry 'd' Lieren [sic] 3 k[inders].8
Maria Jansz Visser appears to be enumerated alone in the monsterrol of 1677 under the name Schotze Marij - my thanks to Mansell Upham for pointing out that a process of elimination led him to this conclusion. Ockert Corneliszoon Olivier with whom she was engaged in an extra-marital relationship was enumerated with his brother Hendrick Cornelisz Olivier and his two unnamed children, presumably Cornelis Ockers and Dina Olivier. Her oldest daughter Aeltje Wilhelmse may still have been in the care of Maria Hendricksz Winkelhausen and Pieter Jansz van der Westhuijsen.9
Vrijbriewen and Burgher StatusOn 18 January 1662, Pieter Jansz van der Westhuijsen was granted a vrijbrief or letter of freedom which released him from his contractual obligations to the VOC and accorded him the status of vrijburgher or free burgher. He was recorded as a soldier. I have assumed this to be Pieter Jansz van der Westhuijsen from Brugge. Corrections welcome.10
Slave TransactionsOn 11 September 1676 Abraham van Gale was sold by Jan van Oldenburgh to Pieter Janssen van Westhuisen, for Rds 51.11,12
On 22 December 1676 Mars van Madagascar was sold by Jan Cornelisse Swanshouck to Pieter Jansz van Westhuysen, for Rds. 45.13,14
On 28 February 1687 Orson van Madagascar and Jacob van Madagascar were sold by Theunis Dircksen van Schalckwyck to Pieter Jansz van der Westhuijsen.15
On 8 January 1689 Arent van Madagascar was sold by Elsie Suurwaarden to Pieter Jansz van der Westhuijsen, for Rds. 60.16
On 18 January 1697 Bruijnet van de Caep was sold by Johannes Starrenburg to Maria van Guinea, for Rds. 85. Both Böeseken and Shell incorrectly record the purchaser to be Pieter van de Westhuysen however this was corrected by Hattingh in Kronos. The purchaser was her mother, who emancipated her daughter in 1703.17,18
On 2 September 1697 Pieter van Malabar was sold by Lambert Adrianse van Weede to Pieter Janssen van Westhuisen, for Rds. 70.19
