BirthOrigin* | Pieter was from Neustadt which at the time was part of Danish Holsten and he may have been born there circa 1665. The date estimate is based on the age of his wife at their marriage. It is tempting to assume individuals from the region now known as Schleswig-Holstein were German, given that today the region is part of Germany, and that their writing was Gothic and/or that they spoke German. However at the time this region fell under the political jurisdiction of Denmark, and German Gothic writing was used by the literate and the royal courts in Denmark and all of Scandinavia.2,3,4 |
Marriage* | He married Feytje van der Merwe, daughter of Willem Schalks van der Merwe and Elsje Cloete, on 25 January 1696 Nederduitsch Gereformeerde Kerk, Stellenbosch, de Caep de Goede Hoop.5 |
Death* | He died between 31 December 1712 and 16 October 1713 de Caep de Goede Hoop, he is enumerated with his wife on 31 December 1712; however, she signs a contract on 16 October 1713 as de weduwe Pieter Robbertsze.6 |
Occupation* | On 31 May 1681 Pieter Robberts was an adelborst or midshipman on the vessel Europa. Adelborst was the entry-level rank for sailors wishing to become officers.7 |
(Crew) ShipVoyage | On 31 May 1681 the Europa departed Texel enroute to de Caep de Goede Hoop where it docked on 28 September 1681. Among those on board were Pieter Robberts who embarked as an adelborst or midshipman.8 |
Contract* | On 8 February 1706 Pieter Robberts concluded a contract with Claas Jansz van Rensburg for the latter to work for him as a bouwknecht - farm labourer - and for any other work that was needed. His wage was twelve guilders a month. Once again Claas Jansz: associates himself with someone from a town close to Rensburg, this time from Neustadt in Holsten which was also under the Danish crown. Clearly he was choosing to be associated with people ethnically closer to Rensburg. The contract was dissolved on 20 June 1708.9,10 |
Names in the record, in publications, etc. | Pieter Robberts was also known as Pijetter Robbersz.11 17 August 1698, the name of Pieter was written in the record as Piter Roobeers.12 16 April 1699, the name of Pieter was written in the record as Piter Robeers.13 |
Monsterrollen and Opgaafrollen (Muster and tax rolls) | In 1693 Pieter Robberts was enumerated in the muster roll, as a sergeant.21 After 25 January 1696 Pieter Robberts was enumerated on the opgaafrol (census/tax roll) in Stellenbosch, at number 0105, along with a wife Feytje van der Merwe. who is enumerated at 0105B. Also counted were three daughters, whom I have assumed to be Margareta Pasman, Trijntie Pasman and Sibilla Pasman. I have also assumed that somehow the four-month-old Roelifie Pasman was perhaps overlooked. The couple were subsequently enumerated with four daughters. Opgaafs were often taken early in the year following that of the stated year of enumeration, and this couple were clearly already married at the time they were enumerated otherwise Fytje, whose husband Roelof Pasman died before the baptism of his daughter Roelifie in September 1695, would most likely have been enumerated with her daughters at a separate number as were Petronella and Engeltje Breda.22 |
Slave Transactions | On 31 January 1696 Madras van der Kust Coromandel was sold by James Minty to Pieter Robberts, for Rds. 80.23 On 9 February 1696 Cupido van Madagascar was sold by Richard Glover to Pieter Robberts, for Rds. 40.24 On 10 February 1696 Kinsa van Madagascar was sold on behalf of Richard Glover by Pieter Robberts toJan Dirx de Beer, for Rds. 100.25 On 2 March 1696 Cupido van Madagascar was sold by Pieter Robberts to Hans Rutgentroost, for Rds. 74.26 On 20 June 1696 Constantia van Malabar was sold by Gerrit Basson to Pijetter Robbersz (Cape Town), de Caep de Goede Hoop, for 80 Rixdollars.27,28 On 22 June 1696 Constantia van Malabar was sold by Pieter Robberts to Joost Ventura de Caep de Goede Hoop, for 80 Rixdollars.29,30 |

Important Note: Even though the parents of this child are recorded as Schalk vd Merwe and Anna Prevost in this record, it is quite unlikely he is their child. They baptised another son just four months later, and there doesn't seem to be any evidence they delayed the baptisms of their children. I have therefor assigned this child to Willem vd Merwe and Elsje Cloete, as candidate parents.
