BirthOrigin* | Jacob was from Biervliet and perhaps born there circa 1656. I have assumed he is the same person who witnessed baptisms in 1677 and 1679.2,3 |
Marriage* | He married Jelletje Harmans before 1677.4 |
Family | Jelletje Harmans b. c 1656 |
Child |
|
Occupation | On 16 April 1679 Jacob van de Voorde was a constable.5 |
Names in the record, in publications, etc. | 6 June 1677, the name of Jacob was written in the record as Jacob Jansz.3 5 November 1679, the name of Jacob was written in the record as Jacob Janssen. |
Baptisms - Witness | Jacob van de Voorde and Jelletje Harmans witnessed the baptism of Geertruijt Elberts on 6 June 1677 Nederduitsch Gereformeerde Kerk, (Cape Town), de Caep de Goede Hoop.4 He and Jelletje Harmans witnessed the baptism of Gerrit Elberts on 5 November 1679 Nederduitsch Gereformeerde Kerk, (Cape Town), de Caep de Goede Hoop.6 |
Slave Transactions | Hans van Madagascar may be the slave who was sold by Theunisz Swartpaart, to Jacob Jansz on 15 December 1676, for Rds. 28. With a view toward further discovery in the record, I have assumed him to be the same individual baptised as an adult company slave (i.e. 25 or older) in 1695.2,7 On 16 April 1679 Jobique van Malabar was sold by Frederick Hendrick Hinejoffa to Jacob van de Voorde, for Rds. 30.5 On 14 October 1679 Cupido van Bengale was sold by Henrik Crudop to Jacob Jansz, for Rds. 60. I have assumed this to be the same slave purchased by Crudop in 1676.8 On 7 March 1680 Jan van Madagascar was sold by Cornelis Meppel to Jacob van de Voorde.9 On 20 April 1681 Boulatijn van Balij was sold by Thomas Charlborn to Jacob van de Voorde, for Rds 40. Hattingh (Foute…) says this transaction involved two slaves and that the total purchase price for the two was Rds. 80. However, he may have overlooked the next transaction for Anthonij van der Kust Coromandel who was also sold by Charlborn, but on behalf of a different owner and to a different purchaser. In that instance, Böeseken records the date as 21 April, but Shell [Changing Hands…] records it as 20 April. It is difficult to be certain which of the three historians was correct without personally reviewing the T&S, but hopefully that will come in time.10,11,12 |
Slave Emancipations | On 23 February 1700 Joseph van Batavia was emancipated by Jacob van de Voorde, and placed in the care of Guillaume Heems for ten years, at the end of which the manumission would come into effect.13 On 23 February 1700 Gerrit van Batavia was emancipated by Jacob van de Voorde, and placed in the care of Aletta ter Meulen for ten years, at the end of which the manumission would come into effect.13 |
