Geertru Elbeers was baptized on 8 December 1697 Nederduitsche Gereformeede Kerk, Drakenstein, Cabo de Goede Hoop. The baptism was witnessed by Pieter van der Bijl and one of the infant's grandmothers, who were Aletta ter Meulen.11

Slave EmancipationsOn 23 February 1700 Gerrit van Batavia was emancipated by Jacob van de Voorde, and placed in the care of Aletta ter Meulen for ten years, at the end of which the manumission would come into effect.14

    Geertru, daughter of a son-in-law [Wessel Pretorius] of the widow [Aletta ter Meulen] of haandris Kelbeers [Heinrich Elberts]; The Witnesses are piter vanderbil, and the godmother the grand mother [Aletta ter Meulen, the paternal grandmother - Geertruyd Meijntinghs - was already deceased] of the child. Hereinafter cited as Drakenstein I Baptisms.
