Laurens was from Bengal and was perhaps born there between 1662 and 1663. 'Van Bengale' or from Bengal was a term loosely applied during the period of VOC dominance to enslaved or formerly enslaved people from any of the countries bordering the Bay of Bengal.¹

Slave Transactions

On 10 April 1687 Laurens van Bengale was sold by Johann van Buytenhem to Fredrick Russouw de Wit, for Rds. 50.²
