Burghert Pieterz van Dyk

M, #7918, b. circa 1664, d. before 8 January 1721
Father*Pieter NN b. c 1650; The father of Burghert and and Joost was for years incorrectly recorded as Jan Pietersz van Dijk. For one thing, their father's first name would have been Pieter (var.) and the relationship is not born out by the record1,2

BirthOrigin*Burghert was from Isberg, spelled Ysenberg/Isenberg in the records at the Cape, and may have been born there circa 1664. The date is estimated, and is based on the fact that soldiers/sailors employed by the VOC were generally in their early to mid twenties. I have assumed him to be younger than his brother Joost.3,4,5,6
Marriage*He married Anna Greeff, daughter of Matthys Greef and Susanna Claasz, on 12 February 1701 Nederduitsch Gereformeerde Kerk, Stellenbosch, de Caep de Goede Hoop.7
Marriage*He married Helena du Toit, daughter of Francois du Toit and Suzanne Seugnet, after June 1711.8

Death*He died before 8 January 1721, when his estate was first inventoried.9

Inventory*Burghert Pieterz's estate was inventoried on 8 January 1721.9
InventoryBurghert Pieterz's estate was inventoried on 17 January 1721.10
InventoryBurghert Pieterz's estate was inventoried on 24 February 1721.11

  • Maria Eali+ b. b 5 Sep 1694; This relationship is offered with a view toward further discovery in the record. It is significant that Burgert Pietersz: inventories her mother's estate in 1697; that prior to her assumed marriage to Johannes Richtman (var.) her mother appears to have been the slave of Pietersz:, and that at her marriage Maria is described as Maria Pieterse van Dijk jonge dogter. On the other hand, in Personalia, Hoge describes her mother as the 'niece' of Burgert Pietersz:, I have not yet identified the source of this assertion. But it seems to be chronologically unlikely, as Burgert and his brother Joost only arrived at the Cape in 1686, and Maria's mother Maria Matthijsen (var.) would have most likely been born around 1663 - which would have rendered her eligible for freedom, and marriage to Richman (var.), at age 22 in around 168522,23,24

Baptisms - WitnessBurghert Pieterz van Dyk and Anna Greeff witnessed the baptism of Adrianùs Greev on 21 May 1702 Nederduitsch Gereformeerde Kerk, Stellenbosch, de Caep de Goede Hoop.18
Monsterrollen and Opgaafrollen (Muster and tax rolls)1692 Joost Pietersz van Dyk was enumerated on the opgaafrol (census/tax roll) in Kaap district, Burgert (No. 01341) followed his brother (01331) on the roll. Each man was recorded with one male slave Burghert Pieterz van Dyk.17
Vrijbriewen and Burgher StatusOn 28 December 1690, Burghert Pieterz van Dyk and Joost Pietersz van Dyk were each granted a vrijbrief or letter of freedom which released them from their contractual obligations to the VOC and accorded them the status of vrijburgher or free burgher.
Slaves owned by individualsIt appears that, before 1685, Maria Matyssen was a slave owned by owned by Burghert Pieterz van Dyk, most likely before her assumed marriage to Johannes Ryckman. In 1697, in the inventory of her estate done by Burchert Pietersz it is stated wiens meijt sij is geweest - that is, whose slave she had been. In the period, meijt (var.) referred most commonly to a female slave and should not be confused with the modern Afrikaans word, meid, which means maid or female domestic servant. It is also not inconceivable that following her separation (divorce?) from her husband (who died in 1691), she returned to the home (and the bed?) of Pietersz.20,21
