Maria Matyssen
F, #8303, b. circa 1663, d. before 29 November 1697
Birth* | Maria Matyssen was born circa 1663.1 |
BaptismCandidate | Maria Matyssen may be the individual who was baptized on 21 October 1685 Nederduitsch Gereformeerde Kerk, (Cape Town), de Caep de Goede Hoop. She would have been married in 1686 or earlier, and in order to do that would have had to have been baptised. This is the only baptism I have found thus far, that fits profile criteria.2 |
Marriage* | She married Johannes Ryckman circa 1685 de Caep de Goede Hoop.3 |
Separation* | She and Johannes Ryckman were separated before 16 June 1691. in the inventory of Johannes estate, it was recorded that he was van sijn huijsvrouw Maria Matthijsse hebben gesepareerd - that is, he had separated from his wife, Maria Matthijsse.4 |
Death* | She died before 29 November 1697 de Caep de Goede Hoop.5 |
Inventory* | Maria's estate was inventoried by Burghert Pieterz van Dyk on 29 November 1697.5 |
Names in the record, in publications, etc. | Maria Matyssen was also known as Maria NN. 11 July 1688, the name of Maria was written in the record as Maria Mathijsse. 5 September 1694, the name of Maria was written in the record as Maria Matthijse.6 29 November 1697, the name of Maria was written in the record as Maria Matthysz: Eli.5 |
Slaves owned by individuals | It appears that, before 1685, Maria Matyssen was a slave owned by owned by Burghert Pieterz van Dyk, most likely before her assumed marriage to Johannes Ryckman. In 1697, in the inventory of her estate done by Burchert Pietersz it is stated wiens meijt sij is geweest - that is, whose slave she had been. In the period, meijt (var.) referred most commonly to a female slave and should not be confused with the modern Afrikaans word, meid, which means maid or female domestic servant. It is also not inconceivable that following her separation (divorce?) from her husband (who died in 1691), she returned to the home (and the bed?) of Pietersz.7,8 |
Slaves Owned by the Company | On 21 October 1685 Maria Matyssen was enslaved and owned by the VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) at the Cape.2 |
