Slaves owned by individuals | It appears that, before 1685, Maria Matyssen was a slave owned by owned by Burghert Pieterz van Dyk, most likely before her assumed marriage to Johannes Ryckman. In 1697, in the inventory of her estate done by Burchert Pietersz it is stated wiens meijt sij is geweest - that is, whose slave she had been. In the period, meijt (var.) referred most commonly to a female slave and should not be confused with the modern Afrikaans word, meid, which means maid or female domestic servant. It is also not inconceivable that following her separation (divorce?) from her husband (who died in 1691), she returned to the home (and the bed?) of Pietersz.10,11 |
