Marriage-Putative* | It is very likely Johanna Petronella Basson and Willem Plooijer were marrried on 30 September 1742 Nederduitsche Gereformeerde Kerk, Stellenbosch. I am offering this as a putative relationship because Johanna's baptism was witnessed by Sijmon Petrus Berg(h) and his mother Anna de Coning - daughter and grandson of Maaij Ansela van Bengale, the founding mother of the Basson family. She may have been born in the household of Anna de Coning who owned a slave Cupido van Bengale. It was not uncommon for slave born children to later adopt a surname in the family of ownership. My thanks to Mansell Upham for helping me with this theory.1 |
Names in the record, in publications, etc. | 5 January 1716, the name of Johanna was written in the record as Johanna Petronella van de Caep.2 |
