Ferdinandùs Appel
M, #6992, b. 4 October 1665, d. before December 1714
Birth | Ferdinandùs Appel was born before 4 October 1665.2 |
Lovers* | In 1685 Ferdinandùs Appel and Maria Kickers were lovers.3 |
Marriage* | He married Levina Cloete, daughter of Gerritt Cloete and Catharina Harmans, circa 1691.4,5 |
Death* | He died before December 1714, my thanks to Hans Heese for sharing the extract of the 1714 opgaafrol taken in December which describes his wife as de wedùwee Ferdinandùs Appel.6,1 |
(Child) Will | On 23 February 1673 Henrick Barentze van der Zee and Jannetje Ferdinandus, both ill and confined to bed, executed a will in which they each designated their surviving spouse as beneficiary in their estate. If Hendrick died first, Jannetje would send f 600 Hollandse waarde to his father Barent Hendricksz:, the mayor of the island Ommeland ([Ameland]. If Jannetje predeceased Hendrick, he would give each of her underage sons from her first marriage, Joannes Appel and Ferdinandùs Appel, half of f 1 000 Hollandse waarde as their mother's portion. It was also their supreme will and wish that if either died first or returned to Patria Hendrick's slave, Simon van Angola, was to be emancipated, however this would only come into effect after three further years of slaving for his surviving owner. The record does not reflect whether or not this ever happened.7 |
(Lover) Ménage à trois | Between 11 June 1683 and 1700 Maria Kickers and Jan Cornelisz were legally married, but at the same time, from at least 1687 Frederich Both and Maria were lovers, apparently with the agreement of Jan. During divorce proceedings in 1700 Maria conceded that eight of her children, that is Theunis Botha, Willem Bootha, Catrijna Both, Cornelia Botha, Anna Bota, Maria Botha and Johannes Botha were fathered by Frederich Both(a) with the apparent encouragement (aanleijding) of her spouse, Jan Cornelisz, at the time. All of these offspring subsequently used the surname Both(a). However, in 1689 two women alleged that Theunis, Maria's oldest child, was fathered by Ferdinandùs Appel. This is born out by modern DNA tests, which have shown that direct patrilineal descendants of Theunis tested positive for the same Y-DNA haplogroup as direct patrilineal descendants of Appel.8 |
Names in the record, in publications, etc. | 2 October 1694, the name of Ferdinandùs was written in the record as Fardinandùs Appel.9 29 November 1699, the name of Ferdinandùs was written in the record as Fardinantùs Appel.10 |
Baptisms - Witness | Ferdinandùs Appel and Helena Clements witnessed the baptism of Joannis van As on 6 April 1692 Nederduitsch Gereformeerde Kerk, Stellenbosch, de Caep de Goede Hoop.12 He and Mari Russara and Annetje Jansz Louw witnessed the baptism of Sara Coetzeè on 28 October 1694 Nederduitsch Gereformeerde Kerk, Stellenbosch, de Caep de Goede Hoop.13,14 He and Mari Russara and Annetje Jansz Louw witnessed the baptism of Dirck Coetse on 28 October 1694 Nederduitsch Gereformeerde Kerk, Stellenbosch, de Caep de Goede Hoop.15,14 He and Elsijn Gijldenhùs witnessed the baptism of Sara van Wijck on 29 November 1699 Nederduitsch Gereformeerde Kerk, Stellenbosch, de Caep de Goede Hoop.16,17 He and Elisabeth van Brakel witnessed the baptism of Ferdinandùs du Bùisson on 3 June 1708 Nederduitsch Gereformeerde Kerk, Stellenbosch, de Caep de Goede Hoop.18 He and Sophia Cloete witnessed the baptism of Jurrian Heylon on 17 February 1709 Nederduitsch Gereformeerde Kerk, Stellenbosch, de Caep de Goede Hoop.19 He is named as a parent in the record of the baptism of Abigael Appel on 7 December 1710 Nederduitsch Gereformeerde Kerk, Stellenbosch, de Caep de Goede Hoop.20 He and Sophia Cloete witnessed the baptism of Ferdinandus van der Westhuysen on 18 September 1712 Nederduitsch Gereformeerde Kerk, Stellenbosch, de Caep de Goede Hoop.21 See: Baptism of Ferdinandùs van Westhùysen |
Notes | A DNA study has found that male descendants of Maria Kickers are from two different Y-chromosome DNA haplogroups. Known descendants of Theunis Botha share the same Y-chromosome DNA as a direct descendant of Ferdinandùs Appel — while descendants of the other sons have different Y-chromosome DNA — most likely that of Frederich Both. This evidence supports an allegation made by two women in 1689 that Theunis — Maria's oldest child — was fathered by Appel. Maria subsequently testified that all her children were fathered by Both and not her husband Jan Cornelisz aka Jan Bombam. Read the attached article by Jaco Greeff who did the DNA study. |
