Claas van Macassar was born circa 1668 in Macassar, age is estimated.¹

Vrijswart[in]*

Before 25 March 1698, Claas van Macassar became a Free Black, in Dutch Vrijswart, a person formerly enslaved, who having purchased his freedom (or had it purchased for him) was permitted to farm, become a trader, or work for others. Although free blacks were nominally equal to free burgers, in practice this was not the case.¹

On 25 March 1698 Lijsbeth van Macassar was sold by Gerard Vieroot to Claas van Macassar, for Rds. 100.²
