Douvre was from Bengal and was perhaps born there circa 1679. Van Bengale - or from Bengal - was a term loosely applied during the period of VOC dominance to enslaved or formerly enslaved people from any of the countries bordering the Bay of Bengal. He was said to be 18 years old in 1697.¹

Slave Transactions

On 21 June 1697 Douvre van Bengale, October van Bengale, Titus van Bengale and Jan van Malabar were sold by Wilhelm Burchgraaff to Jan Dircks de Beer, respectively for Rds. 60, Rds. 70, Rds. 60 and Rds. 50.^2,3
On 24 January 1698 Adam van Bengale and Douvre van Bengale were sold by Jan Dircksen de Beer to Hendrick Cornelisz Olivier, for Rds. 210. I have assumed Adam to be the same individual with unknown provence purchased by De Beer on 27 June 1697.⁴
