Birth*Pasquael van der Caep was born in 1677 in de Caep de Goede Hoop.2

Slave TransactionsOn 19 July 1678 Fransois van Malabar, Jobicque van Bengale and Pasquael van der Caep were sold by Aletta van Hinloopen, to Tobias Vlasvat, for Rds. 170. Pasquaal — the child of Jobicque and Francoise — was just one year old and Böeseken and Hattingh disagree on the interpretation of this transaction. Böeseken says a condition of the sale was that Pasquael was not to be sold and that he was to be freed at age 20; while Hattingh says he could be sold until age 20 and was thereafter to be freed. This latter interpretation appears to be more accurate, because Vlasvat sold Pacquael the following year imposing a similar condition to the sale.3,4
On 15 November 1679 Pasquael van der Caep was sold by Tobias Vlasvat to Hilletje Redoch, this child was sold away from his parents at two years old. A condition of the sale was that he was not to be sold prior to age 20 when he was to be emancipated.5
