(Owner) Abduction In 1672 Cupido van Cap Vert was abducted from de Caep de Goede Hoop by Arent Zuijck and taken to Batavia where Zuijck was the junior merchant. Two years later, on 21 July 1674 Chris Hasselberg bookkeeper on the flute Helena, declared at the requiest of Cupido's owner Hendrick Evert Smit, that a slave named Cupido had accosted him in Batavia and said he knew Hasselberg and that he was living with 'mons. Zuijck'. While Hasselberg apparently believed it was not Cupido whom he recalled having had a nick in his ear, Smidt was otherwise convinced and appointed an agent, namely Christoffel Heyningh, to use the weight of the law to effect his return. This had still not be done by April 1677 when Smidt appealed to the Council of Policy for help.6,7
Names in the record, in publications, etc.14 April 1675, the name of Hendrick was written in the record as Hendrick Evertsz Smidt.
29 August 1677, the name of Hendrick was written in the record as Hendrick Everts Smit.
23 October 1678, the name of Hendrick was written in the record as Hendrick Everts Smith.
Baptisms - WitnessHendrick Evert Smit and Trijn Ras, Hans Ras and Lysbet Jansz witnessed the baptism of Hans Ras on 25 June 1671 Nederduitsch Gereformeerde Kerk, (Cape Town), de Caep de Goede Hoop.8
He and Adriana Sterreveldt witnessed the baptism of Adriaen Brinckman on 17 January 1677 Nederduitsch Gereformeerde Kerk, (Cape Town), de Caep de Goede Hoop.9
He and Arriantie Sterrevelt witnessed the baptism of Johannes de Lange on 11 February 1680 Nederduitsch Gereformeerde Kerk, (Cape Town), de Caep de Goede Hoop.10
He and Arriantie Sterrevelt witnessed the baptism of Johannes Vlok on 22 June 1681 Nederduitsch Gereformeerde Kerk, (Cape Town), de Caep de Goede Hoop.11
Slave TransactionsOn 19 August 1678 Jacob Caste van Bengale was sold by Dirck Jansz Smient to Hendrick Evertsz Smidt, for f 285, Cape valuation. I wonder if Jacob reverted to Smient's ownership due to non-payment of the promised purchase price by Smit.12,13
On 7 September 1679 Unnamed Slave was sold by Martinus van Banchem to Hendrick Everts Smith, for Rds. 48.14
On 4 May 1681 Aro van Coylangh was sold by Hester Weijers to Hendrick Evert Smit de Caep de Goede Hoop, for now, because there is no other candidate that fits the profile, I have assumed this to be the same slave Wouter Mostert acquired from Adriaen Andriesen.15,16
Slaves owned by individualsCupido van Cap Vert was a slave circa 1672 from Cabo Verde, owned by Hendrick Evert Smit.17
