(Passenger) ShipVoyage On 18 December 1672 the Azië departed Texel enroute to de Caep de Goede Hoop where it docked on 15 April 1673. Among those on board who disembarked at the Cape were Albert Barends Gildenhuisz, Margaretha Hoefnagels, Hendrick Barentsz and Maria Hendricksz Winkelhausen. Albert and Hendrick appear to have been brothers.4,5

He and Margaretha Hoefnagels witnessed the baptism of Albert Barents du Plooy on 10 May 1705 Nederduitsche Gereformeerde Kerk, (Cape Town).9
NotesAlbert Barends Gildenhuisz and Hendrick Barentsz These are presumably brothers. They arrived together in 1673 with their wives.
Monsterrollen and Opgaafrollen (Muster and tax rolls)In 1663 Jacob Cloete and Feigen Radergoertgens were enumerated in the muster roll, they were recorded with two knechts Hendrick Hagens and Albert Barends Gildenhuisz. I have assumed the first to be Hendrick Hagens who until 1662 was recorded as an adelborst [cadet or midshipman] and who re-enters the service of the company as an adelborst in 1664.10
Vrijbriewen and Burgher StatusOn 23 September 1661, Albert Barends Gildenhuisz was granted a vrijbrief or letter of freedom which released him from his contractual obligations to the VOC and accorded him the status of vrijburgher or free burgher. He was recorded as a sailor on the ship Princesse Royael.11
