Notes | The attached article by Margaret Cairns is essential reading for any descendant of Anna Groothenning.5 Circa 1724 The compilers of SAG incorrectly ascribed a son named Casparus Bester [var] to Andreas Bester and Johanna Bok van der Caep and that instead the individual who marrried Maria Elizabeth Swart was Caspar Bester the son of Jacobus Bester and Anna Hasselaar. He is referred to in the inventory on 3 Dec 1776 of his mother's estate. |
Monsterrollen and Opgaafrollen (Muster and tax rolls) | Johanna Bok van der Caep appeared on the opgaafrol (census/tax roll) of 1760 in which it was stated that her name was Anna Boek, that she was the widow of Andries Bester, and she lived alone with no family members but that she employed one female servant, and owned 16 male and 2 female slaves, along with one boy slave - all of whom were unnamed. She had 30 horses, 40 cattle, 400 sheep, and had sown 25 (muids of) wheat, harvesting 240. She was enumerated in the Cape District, de Caep de Goede Hoop.6 |

- [S198] Margaret Cairns, "Geringer and Bok", On 27th August 1709, Abraham Poulé, the official of that time together with his clerk, grappled with this third will. Geringer aged fifty-six and Bok forty-one, first cancelled their previous testaments executed either singly or in partnership; the survivor was again to be sole heir with the usual provisions for Christian burial and payment of just debts. Anna and the children were all granted freedom and Michiel was recorded as 'Michiel Geringer' for the first and only time. (Citing: CJ. 2650 no. 6, 27.8.1709).
