Slave EmancipationsOn 17 May 1731 Arnoldus Coevoet and Pieter van Helena van de Caep were emancipated by the Company, in terms of a Resolution adopted by the Council of Policy which noted they were both baptised, spoke der Nederduijtsche taal and were men in good standing and sufficiently skilled to live and work among the free population. As was customary, they were required to give the Company a slave each in compensation, and this they did, the slaves being Makontje van Rio de la Goa and Masinga van Rio de la Goa.2
