BirthOrigin*Dirk was from Der Mere and may have been born there circa 1630. His age is estimated.1 
Death*He died on 14 December 1658, succumbed to injuries sustained in a knife fight a week earlier.A post-mortem revealed a severe wound in the liver which had 'mortified' resulting in his death, which on this date was recorded in Van Riebeeck's journal. He was also recorded among the Deceased Freemen both in 1658 and 1659. He had been employed by the Amsterdam Chamber.2,3
 
(Passenger) ShipVoyage On 23 August 1653 the Vrede departed Texel enroute to (Cape Town) where it docked on 6 January 1654. Among those on board was Dirk Ariensz: Vreem.4,5 
Monsterrollen and Opgaafrollen (Muster and tax rolls)On 20 March 1656 Dirk Ariensz: Vreem was enumerated in the muster roll, as an adelborst or midshipman.1
On 31 May 1657 Dirk Ariensz: Vreem was enumerated in the muster roll, as a carpenter earning f 15 per month.6
On 15 February 1658 Dirk Ariensz: Vreem and Pieter Paulusz: Cley were enumerated in the muster roll among the freemen, as free carpenters. Enumerated with them was Michiel Bartholomieusz:, described as 'in their service.7'
Vrijbriewen and Burgher StatusOn 10 October 1657, Dirk Ariensz: Vreem was granted a vrijbrief or letter of freedom which released him from his contractual obligations to the VOC and accorded him the status of vrijburgher or free burgher.8
Crime and relatedOn 7 December 1658 Dirk Ariensz: Vreem was involved in a knife fight with Pieter Paulusz: Cley, who subsequently fled into the interior. Vreem was 'dangerously wounded in the side.9'
