Van Bengale - or from Bengal - was a term loosely applied during the period of VOC dominance to enslaved or formerly enslaved people from any of the countries bordering the Bay of Bengal. She was said to be 10 or 11 years old in 1693.1 |
Slave Transactions | On 28 May 1693 Sara van Malabar and Lijsje van Bengale were sold by Jan de Wit to Cornelis Jansz Simons, for Rds. 30 and Rds. 50 respectively.2 On 10 May 1694 Lijsje van Bengale was sold by Cornelis Jansz Simons to Matthijs Wichtman, for Rds. 80.3 |
