BirthOrigin*Klaas was from Angola and perhaps born there circa 1673. He was described as a slafie in 1678, and I therefor assume him to have been a very young child.1
(Slave) SlaveInventory Before 8 May 1724, most likely at the time of the decease of her husband, Jan Stevensz Botma de Jonge on a date unknown, Christina de Brùyn came to own the following slaves who were named in the inventory of her estate: Klaas van Angola, Cupido van Madagascar, Carel van Couthin, Aron van Mallabaar, Frans van de Cust, Anthonij van Bengalen, Biron van Mallabaar, Francis van de Caab, Susanna van Madagascar, Marcus van Madagascar, Mathijs van Mallebaar and Titus van Mallebaar.2
Names in the record, in publications, etc.8 May 1724, the name of Klaas was written in the record as Claas van Angola.3
NotesOn 8 May 1724 I have assumed Klaas van Angola is the same very young slave, slafie, purchased in 1678 by Steven Jansz Botma, the father-in-law of Christina de Brùyn, from Willem Forbis, the onderstuurman of the ship St. Andries, which I suspect was an English vessel. Relatively few slaves were imported from Angola after those who arrived on the Amersfoort in 1658. It is therefor unlikely there were two slaves from Angola named Claas/Klaas owned by members of the same family.4
Slave TransactionsOn 13 January 1678 Klaas van Angola was sold by Willem Forbis to Steven Jansz Botma, for f 100. Indian valuation.5,6
On 6 June 1724 Klaas van Angola and Susanna van Madagascar were sold from the estate of Christina de Brùyn to Johannes Botma.7
