Abraham was from Bengal and perhaps born there in 1649/50. He was said to be 27 or 28 years old in 1677. The toponym 'van Bengale' or from Bengal was a term loosely applied during the period of VOC dominance to enslaved or formerly enslaved people from any of the countries bordering the Bay of Bengal.¹

Slave Transactions

On 24 March 1677 Abraham van Bengale was sold by Aert Verhoeven to Laurens Cornelissen, for Rds. 50.^2,3
