Claes was from Coromandel Coast or the west coast of Ceylon and may have been born there in 1647/48. He was around 24 or 25 when sold as a slave in 1672.²

On 4 April 1672 Claes van der Kust was sold by Admiral Joan Barra to Adrianus de Vooght, for Rds 70.^2,3
