(Murderer) Death On 28 May 1714 Jacobùs van den Berge was murdered by Johann Adam Peugel at the home of Robert Jansz van Hoorn and Catharina Cornelisz, the latter being the sister of the victim's concubine Aaltie Cornelisz. Peugel had attempted to molest 14-year-old Maettijen Robbertsz van Hoorn, the Van Hoorn daughter, and responded violently when Aeltie Cornelisz intervened. Peugel was sentenced to banishment and his property confiscated, but he had already fled.2,3,4

[S726] Johan Pottas, "Johan Pottas email Mar 7, 2013 9:43 pm," e-mail message from e-mail address to SA Genealogie mail list, 7 March 2013, Death(4,1): Jacobus van den Berg was vermoor in die huis van Catharina Bombam en Robbert Jansz van Hoorn in 1714 deur Jan Adam Peugel, wat hom met 'n mes 'n dodelike steek toegedien het, teen die hals. Hy was werksaam by Robbert op die stadium, besig om vir Robbert skoene te maak.

    Op 28 Mei 1714 was Metje van Hoorn tuis op die dag toe Jan Peugel daar opdaag, hy het homself aan haar opgedring en haar probeer oorreed om te soen. Die 'bijsit' van Jacobus van den Berg, Aale [DR: Aeltie Cornelisz] (Jacomina Carteniers was klaarblyklik reeds oorlede) sê toe aan peugel: 'Laat die nonnie met vrede haar werk doen. 'Peugel reageer op haar antwoord deur Aale teen die grond te gooi en haar te skop. Jacobus probeer tussenbeide tree en Peugel druk hom agteroor teen teen 'n stoel vas. Jacobus ruk homself los en gryp toe twee messe van sy werkbank af en sê aan Peugel dat hy na buite moes kom.
    Tydens die geveg verloor Jacobus sy balans en hy word dodelik verwond.

    Terwyl Jacobus op die grond lê rig Peugel toe sy woede weereens op Aale deur haar te gryp en bo-op Jacobus te gooi. Hy skreeu toe vir haar: 'Lê daar jou verdomde Hoer'.

    Daar is 'n inskrywing op 15 Mei 1714 in die 'Generale Kassarekening' van die kerkraad van Stellenbosch vir die begrafnis van 'Jacobus van den Bergen' vir f 6. Op dieselfde dag is daar ook nog 'n inskrywing vir f 3 vir die begrafnis van een van sy kinders. In die hofsaak word die datum van die moord gemeld as 28 Mei 1714, so tussen die hofstukke en die inskrywing in die boeke van die Stellenboschse gemeente is daar 'n twee weke verskil. Jan Adam Peugel vlug en word skuldig bevind en gevonnis tot verbanning en dat sy eiendom gekonfiskeer word.. Hereinafter cited as "Johan Pottas email Mar 7, 2013 9:43 pm."

    8.10.1700 trou `Jacobus van Bergen van Bresjes met Jacomina Carteniers van Oudenaarde Jongd.' Hy was 'n skoenmaker van beroep. Hulle het in Dorpstraat, Stellenbosch gewoon. In 1714 is hy deur Jan Peugel vermoor. (CJ 783 verw. 6 van 1.11.1714). Hereinafter cited as Palmkronieke I Baptisms.
