Pieter was from Bengal and was perhaps born there between 1671 and 1692. Van Bengale - or from Bengal - was a term loosely applied during the period of VOC dominance to enslaved or formerly enslaved people from any of the countries bordering the Bay of Bengal. He was said to be 20 or 21 years old in 1692.¹

Slave Transactions

On 28 April 1692 Carel van Bengale and Pieter van Bengale were sold by Jan Hanne Griff to Guillaume Heems, for Rds. 120.²
