Birth*Maria Luy was born before 1685 in de Caep de Goede Hoop, This estimate is based the muster rolls (monsterollen) and opgaafrollen (tax rolls) for the period 1682 and the baptism in 1688 of Dina van Cochin and her four children, Maria, Kasper Jans, Hendrick, and Antonij. Jan (Luij) van Ceylon and Dina van Cochin first appear in the Opgaafrol of 1685 as the partners of Marquart (Paij) van Ceylon when, according to Hattingh they owned patches of land in the Stellenbosch district. Jan Luij and Dina van Cochin are recorded with two sons and a daughter, all were unnamed but the daughter would have been Maria. Given the pattern of maternal reproduction in the period, it is likely the children were born approximately two years apart, suggesting that Dina van Cochin would have born her first child in about 1680.1,2

BaptismMaria Luy was baptized on 1 February 1688 Nederduitsch Gereformeerde Kerk, Stellenbosch, de Caep de Goede Hoop. The baptism was witnessed by Elisabeth Nieumeyer and Jan Mostert. She was one of four siblings baptised on the same date, along with their mother, Dina van Couchin.3,1
Death*She died after 1692 de Caep de Goede Hoop, when, in court for illegal hunting, Jan Luij refers to four children. Thereafter she seems to disappear from the record - the family is only enumerated with two sons in 1695. It is of course possible that she married, but no evidence of such has been thus far identified.4

Names in the record, in publications, etc.1 February 1688, the name of Maria was written in the record as Maria.5
Monsterrollen and Opgaafrollen (Muster and tax rolls)Jan Luy van Ceylon and Dina van Couchin appeared on the opgaafrol (tax roll) of 1685 Stellenbosch, de Caep de Goede Hoop, along with one daughter who would have been Maria and two sons. It seems that one would have been Casper Janse who from the record was older than his brothers; and, either Antonij or Hendrik.6
She may have been one of the unnamed children mentioned in the muster roll of 1685 in the household of Jan Luy van Ceylon and Dina van Couchin Stellenbosch, de Caep de Goede Hoop.7
She, Casper Janse, Antonij and Hendrik would have been the unnamed children who appeared on the muster roll of 1688 in the household of Dina van Couchin and Jan Luy van Ceylon Stellenbosch.7
Slave EmancipationsDina van Couchin and Jan Luy van Ceylon were emancipated before 1685 when they appeared in the opgaafrol of free people for Stellenbosch; along with their daughter Maria; and two of their sons Casper Janse, Antonij and Hendrik. None of the children were named in the muster rolls or opgaafrollen, but based on other records, it is clear these are their offsping.7
