Slaves Owned by the Company | On 23 March 1670 Nicolaas NN may have been a slave owned by the VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) at the Cape. This theory is based on the fact that at the time, children born to slaves owned by the VOC were required to be baptised; on the fact that the child's mother is only referred to in his baptism record with the toponym van Bengale; and, on the informal way of identifying the witnesses by first name only.1 |
