Slave Transactions | On 15 May 1666 Jan van Bengale was sold by Jacob Cauw to Luitenant Johannes Coon, for Rds. 100. In terms of the agreement, Cau could purchase Jan back at the same amount; and if Coon did not have the purchase price immediately available, he could pay in instalments.6,7,8 On 15 May 1666 Diana van Bengale was sold by Jacob Cauw to Augustinus Boccaert, she would have accompanied Cauw and his wife from Batavia as they journeyed back to Patria. She was sold for Rds. 70 and was to be sold back to either of the couple should they return to the East.9 |

"A man and his wife who also again come back into Groote Catrijn's life are Jacob Cau / Cauw and Anna Machtelt van Coevoerden. He is a junior merchant (1656) in Batavia serving later in Macassar and commander (1664) of the western coast of Sumatra. A jurist, he sits on the Council of Justice at Batavia. When admiral of the return fleet (May 1666), he inspects the Cape as commissioner where he again encounters Groote Catrijn."
