Birth*Marthinus van Staden was born before 27 June 1706 in de Caep de Goede Hoop.1
 
BaptismMarthinus van Staden was baptized on 27 June 1706 Nederduitsche Gereformeerde Kerk, Drakenstein, de Caep de Goede Hoop. The baptism was witnessed by Marten Jans van Staden and Catharina Willemsz. This is most likely the baptism of Marthinus van Staden. Marthe van Staden does not appear in the record again. In 1709 the child's mother, remarried as a widow to Claasz Jansz van Rensburg, is listed in the opgaaf along with him, 2 sons and 1 daughter. A record for the baptism of a Marthinus has never been found.1
Marriage*He married Katharina Bota, daughter of Jacobus Botha and Elsij Snijman, on 15 August 1728 Nederduitsch Gereformeerde Kerk, Drakenstein, de Caep de Goede Hoop.2
Death*He died before 3 October 1746 de Caep de Goede Hoop.3

Names in the record, in publications, etc.15 August 1728, the name of Marthinus was written in the record as Martinus van Staden.2
Baptisms - WitnessMarthinus van Staden and Catharina Botha witnessed the baptism of Marthinus Christoffel Botha on 6 February 1729 Nederduitsch Gereformeerde Kerk, Drakenstein, de Caep de Goede Hoop.5
Vrijbriewen and Burgher StatusMarthinus van Staden became a burgher circa 1728, in Dutch vryburgher or vrijburgher, initially a status in which a soldier or other employee of the VOC was released from their contractual obligations to the VOC and permitted to farm, become a tradesman, or work for others. Subsequently some individuals, including the Huguenot refugees, were brought to the Cape specifically to farm and were burghers from the time of their arrival Drakenstein, Cape Colony.6
