Monsterrollen and Opgaafrollen (Muster and tax rolls) | On 20 March 1656 Pieter Visagie was enumerated in the muster roll, as a sailor.5 On 6 March 1657 Pieter Visagie was enumerated in the muster roll, as a sailor.6 On 31 May 1657 Pieter Visagie was enumerated in the muster roll, as a sailor earning f 10 per month.7 On 15 February 1658 Pieter Visagie, Jacob Theunisz, Frans Gerritsz van den Uijthoorn and Symon Jansz: In 't Velt were enumerated in the muster roll, among the freemen, as Visagie's Company and owners.8 |
Vrijbriewen and Burgher Status | On 15 December 1657, Pieter Visagie was granted a vrijbrief or letter of freedom which released him from his contractual obligations to the VOC and accorded him the status of vrijburgher or free burgher. He was recorded as a sailor.9 |
Company Journal | On 8 September 1660 in the Company Journal, as translated: ...As the agriculturists Pieter Visagie and Jan Coenraad Visser, are becoming daily more indifferent to their work and consequently piling up their debt, without displaying any zeal whatever in the rearing of wheat, with which alone they will be able to pay what they owe, it was finally decided to instruct the Company's agricultural superintendent, Cruythoff, daily to urge them on to their work as if they were still in the Company's service, until they shall have cultivated their lands to such an extent as will make them equal in value to their debt, seeing that the Company advances everything to them at a cheap rate, keeps their mouths open, and helps them up from the very bottom. It is therefore but fair that they should make every effort for repayment, without being compelled to do so by the Company.10 |
