Names in the record, in publications, etc.2 November 1749, the name of Izaak was written in the record as Isaak Meyer.5
Vrijbriewen and Burgher StatusIzaak Meyer became a burgher circa 1745, in Dutch vryburgher or vrijburgher, a status in which a soldier or other employee of the VOC was released from their contractual obligations to the VOC and permitted to farm, become a tradesman, or work for others. Burgher of Swellendam, and was a 'trekboer' who farmed with cattle on 'Brakkenkuyl (Brakkehuijl)' on the Slang River, a farm on the Breë River, 'Port de Rietvalleij' on the Buffeljagt River, 'Welgelegen' near George, 'De Klipheuwel' on the Gouritz River and 'De Zandfonteijn' between the Cowie and Vis Rivers.1
