Monsterrollen and Opgaafrollen (Muster and tax rolls)1725 Willem Stolts was enumerated on the opgaafrol (census/tax roll) in (Cape Town), de Caep de Goede Hoop, at number 0375, along with his mother Christina Pietersz van de Caep. at number 0376; and Pieter van Bengale at number 0377. They were all designated VS, that is vrijswart or formerly enslaved person. They had all been emancipated together two years earlier. Willem was recorded as owning 10 sheep or cattle.2
Slave BirthsCirca 1695, Pieter van Bengale was born in bondage.1
Slave EmancipationsOn 14 July 1723 Christina Pietersz van de Caep, Willem Stolts and Pieter van Bengale were emancipated by Stijenten de Brùijn. They were emancipated in terms of a testamentary provision which included a bequest to them of a wagon, 8 oxen and 2 fish nets to enable them to earn a living.3,1

[S649] Margaret Cairns, "Willem Stolts of the Cape - 1692-1750", Familia (Willem Stolts of the Cape - 1692-1750) XXVII/1990 No. 2 (1990): Her [Steijntjen de Bruijn] several wills provide most interesting reading, in particular on 'Willem van die Caap' as he was initially styled. Later in the same document he became 'Willem Stolts van die Caap'. Not only did the will give Willem his freedom but also, he, together with Pieter van Bengalen and Christina Pieterse van die Caap was bequeathed a wagon 8 oxen and 2 fISh nets in order to earn a living.
