- Over the years, and until today, many historians and genealogists working on the imported slave/political exile population in the first years of the colonial settlement at the Cape have assumed that van Bougies (variants) referred to a place in Indonesia. Bugis is an exonym or zenonym, that is a name used by an ethnic group (or others) to describe themselves. It is also the name of their language. The Bugis are from South Sulawesi.
