Ismael van de Khoe is the subject of Mansell Upham,'s At War with Society ... Did God hear? - the curious baptism in 1705 of an 'Hottentot' infant named Ismael) which contextualises this baptism and the name of the child in terms of naming and baptism practices of children at the Cape in the period, as well as in terms of etymology and history.
