Paulus was recorded without origin in 1662, but was perhaps born circa 1640.¹

Vrijbriewen and Burgher Status

On 18 January 1662, Paulus van Hanckelhoven was granted a vrijbrief or letter of freedom which released him from his contractual obligations to the VOC and accorded him the status of vrijburgher or free burgher. He was recorded as a sailor.²
