Jan was from Utrecht and was perhaps born there circa 1640.¹

Vrijbriewen and Burgher Status

On 27 November 1660, Jan Carelsz: was granted a vrijbrief or letter of freedom which released him from his contractual obligations to the VOC and accorded him the status of vrijburgher or free burgher. He was recorded as a sailor on the Eliphant.²
On 20 September 1662, Jan Carelsz: was granted a vrijbrief or letter of freedom which released him from his contractual obligations to the VOC and accorded him the status of vrijburgher or free burgher. He was recorded as a young sailor.³
