Vrijbriewen and Burgher Status | On 3 December 1659, Louys Ryckert was granted a vrijbrief or letter of freedom which released him from his contractual obligations to the VOC and accorded him the status of vrijburgher or free burgher. He was recorded as a cook at the Fort.10 On 3 December 1659, Claes Lambertsz: and Louys Ryckert were, in terms of a Resolution of the Council of Policy, released him from their contractual obligations to the VOC and permitted to become free bakers for the settlement.3 |
