BirthOrigin*Hector was from Bengal and perhaps born there circa 1660. Bengal was a term loosely applied during the period of VOC dominance to enslaved or formerly enslaved people from any of the countries bordering the Bay of Bengal.1,2 
Names in the record, in publications, etc.14 September 1678, the name of Hector was written in the record as Hector Casta Bengale.3
Slave TransactionsHector van Bengale and Scipio Africanus van de Kust Malabar were sold by Johannes Ravensbergh, to Willem Schalk on 1 November 1677, for Rds. 50 each. I have assumed that Scipio Casta Malabar is the same person as Scipio Africanus van Malabar. Corrections welcome.3,4

    Willem Schalck, vrylandbouer alhier, erken dat hy aan sr Joannes Ravensbergh, mediese dokter alhier, die bedrag van f 200 skuld spruitende uit die koop van twee lyfeies, genaamd Hector en Scipio, vir f 200, betaalbaar op 1 Januarie aanstaande jaar; indien hy in gebreke sou bly om op die dag te betaal sal °5 tot die bedrag bygevoeg word asook 6% rente per jaar bereken van 1 November 1677 tot 1 Januarie 1679; en in welke geval die twee lyfeies ook aan Ravensbergh terug besorg sal word sonder enige verdere aanspraak op hulle.

    [Soos uit die vorige stuk blyk was hy nie ten volle betaal nie en het die werklike transaksie al veel vroeer plaasgevind. Die aangehaalde sinsnede is eerder gebruik om die verkoper se tevredenheid met die ooreengekomde verkoopprys te kenne te gee en nie as ‘n aanduiding dat hy dit in werklikheid ontvang het nie.].
