BirthOrigin* | Cupido was from Coromandel Coast and perhaps born there in 1671/72. There was a number of slaves sold in this period by individuals who arrived at the Cape on the Cronenburg and the Wapen van Alkmaar which had sailed within a couple of days of each other from Masulipatnam. The journey took 2½ months, which does not seem to allow for a stopover to purchase slaves at another location so I am assuming that those slaves sold as "van de Kust" or "from the Coast" were from the coastal region around Masulipatnam, that is, the Coromandel Coast and that they were acquired prior to departure for the purpose of selling them at the Cape. There were other slaves who arrived on the same vessels, and whose origins were stipulated as "van Malabar" who I believe were likely brought to Masulipatnam sometime before October 1686. He was said to be 15-16 years old in 1687, and 22 years old in 1695.1 |
Slave Transactions | On 2 January 1687 Cupido van der Kust Coromandel was sold by Willem Joris van de Velde to Guillaume Heems, for Rds. 34.2 On 12 April 1695 Cupido van der Kust Coromandel was sold by Guillaume Heems to Roelof van Wijck, for Rds. 65 and on condition that Cupido would not be sold again for two years.3 |
