Arrived at the Cape in 1751. It is most likely that he was in the service of the VOC as he married exactly ten years later, presumably after his contract with the VOC was completed.
The names Barthold and the patronymic Pietersen are not Danish. The first name Bertel and patronymic Pedersen are common in Denmark. Names were usually "Dutchified" by company officials upon registration in the service of the VOC or on arrival at the Cape of Good Hope.
The first name Barthold does not apear on documents of the time but first appears in the work of CC de Villiers "geslachtsregistersvan Zuid Afrikaansche Familien" and may have been assumed by the author himself.
On archival documents the name is Bartel Pietersen, a name which is carried by the descendants of his youngest son Frederick until the present day.
