Mengale was from Macassar, Sulawesi, and was likely born there circa 1640. It was recorded that his behaviour was good — dragt sig wel.¹

Arrival

On 21 March 1681, Daim Mengale van Macassar arrived at Cape from Batavia on board the Huis te Zilverstein. He was among 11 Indonesian royal princes and nobility who, along with their families, wives, concubines, slaves and retinue, were sent into exile as ‘imprisoned criminals’ around this time. On the same vessel were Assang van Macassar, Boung van Macassar, Kierssi van Macassar, Samprina van Macassar, Chitra Wangsa van Macassar and Carrie Mangin Bura van Macassar.²

Occupation*

On 5 September 1686 Carrie Mangin Bura van Macassar was recorded as the servant — dienaar of D.M. — of Daim Mengale van Macassar.¹
