1   Frans Alwyn Smit SCHIMPER. Born 15 Mar 1842 in Graaf Reinett. Died 1919.

SCHIMPER, The Honourable Frans Alewyn Smit, JP., Member of the Legislative Council, Bloemfontein; b. 15th March, 1842, at Graaff Reinett, C.C.; s. of Johannes F. Schimper. Educ. at Graaff Reinett; m. in 1864, S.F. Eksteen, of Swellendam, C.C.; 12 children. Came to the O.F.S. in 1863, went through the Basuto War of 1865-8 as a burgher. Appointed on first commission to inspect and survey the farms of the conquered territory, including the township of Ladybrand. Was one of the first settlers to farm in the district, viz., 'Bresler's Flat,' in 1869, a farm of 8,000 acres in extent. This is one of the best stock farms in the country, particularly for sheep and horses. He has taken many prizes for the former at Bloemfontein and Port Elizabeth Shows. Most of the thoroughbreds on the farm before the War were descended from the famous 'Master Greystock' (by 'Galopin-Lizzie Greystock'), which won over £54,000 in stakes before the War, and sired three Johannesburg Handicap winners in 'Goshen', 'Chanticleer', and 'Recondite'. During the War he lost stock valued at £40,000, but since the declaration of Peace has gradually got the farm stocked again, and has already a small but select stud of mares, producing good winners in 'Buffoon', 'Eight Bells', and 'Gossoon'. Sent three exhibits of wool to the Colonial Product Exhibition in London a few years ago, getting three silver medals. The farm is in a very high state of cultivation, and is most up-to-date, being enclosed and sub-divided into 15 paddocks. It is irrigated, the water being brought to the homestead in something like 4,000 yards of piping. The farm is 5,000 ft. above sea level. Is President of the S.A. Judges' Association, one of the Directors of the S.A. Oil Co., and Director of the Livestock Insurance Society. Was a member of the Agricultural Board under the Free State Govt. Clubs: Rand Club, Johannesburg, Bloemfontein Club, and Winburg Club. Add., 'Bresler's Flat,' Winburg, O.R.C.

28   David Schalk VAN DER MERWE. Born 1739 in Drakenstein. Christen 16 Jun 1739. Died 4 May 1798 in Camdeboo.

               Veldwagmeester and Heemraad of Graaf-Reinet.

In 1766 Van der M. was farming in the Camdeboo, and that year he and Carel van der Merwe wrote a joint letter to the Stellenbosch landdros stating that they were being improvished by the raids of the Bushmen, against whom they asked for 200 pounds of lead and 400 pounds of gunpowder to defend themselves.

In 1770 two farms 'aan de Camdeboesberg', namely De Cust and De Moorddal, were entered in Van der M.'s name as loan-farms, and in 1772 he acquired the farm Cephanjespoort as well. When Hendrik Swellengrebel visited this area in 1776, he spent some time with Van der M., who according to the official return of 1782 already possessed 700 sheep.

From 17.5.1774 Van der M. served as 'field corporal' under Comdt Rudolph Opperman. His first attack on the Bushmen took place on 1.6.1775 and during the fight forty-eight Bushmen were shot down while twelve children were caught and divided among the burghers. the commando of 1776 had less success since only nineteen burghers turned out and the commando could achieve little against the bands of robbers in the Sneeuberg, from which many people had fled with their stock to the Camdeboo. Even Adriaan van Jaarsveld had left and gone to live at Bruintjeshoogte. A shortage of lead and gunpowder also hampered their efforts.

In his report, Van der M. stated a deplorable situation had arisen among the burghers: in spite of the serious stock losses and herdsmen who were murdered many of them were unwilling to do commando duties: others sent armed Hottentots and half-breeds to do commando service for them. van der M. pointed out that many of their excuses were  entirely untrue, while instances occurred where burghers wrote to him in a sarcastic and disparaging manner. Even so, he said, his commando had succeeded in killing or capturing sixty-two Bushmen. His 1777 report was in much the same strain.

Still refusing to do commando duties in 1779 and 1780, the burghers offered numerous excuses, and a recommendation of the militia council of Stellenbosch that the Bruintjeshoogte burghers should help in the Sneeuberg had little effect.

Meanwhile on the occasion of the Governor Joachim Plettenberg's visit in 1778, van der M. stated specifically that owing to all these problems a new district with a landdros and heemraad was essential, and advocated a new congregation as well. The Governor agreed with him and recommended this strongly to the seventeen.

In 1783 Van der m. and Adriaan van Jaarveld once again pressed for a new landdros district and three years later the district of Graaf-Reinett was formed. Van der M. was nominated Heemraad and also appointed commandant.

He married Anna Maria Pretorius at Tulbagh on 25.5.1770 and had ten sons and five daughters. His wife died on 5.10.1788.
